Pole & podium for Bell as British GT title challenge accelerates
4th August 2019
Rob Bell continued his rich seam of form in the British GT championship at Brands Hatch as he and Shaun Balfe pushed for top spot in qualifying and the race. A strong qualifying performance by each driver saw a hard-fought debut British GT pole position for the McLaren 720S GT3, as the Bell-Balfe pairing continues to achieve milestone results during this first competitive year for the new McLaren model.
After a strong opening stint by teammate Shaun, Rob took over for the run to the line in second place. After re-joining the race, Rob defended well throughout the opening few laps to maintain 2nd place while working to close the gap to the race leader. However, with time running out and having pulled out a gap to the chasing pack, Rob crossed the line to secure a second 2nd-place finish for the team and more important championship points.
Rob Bell -
“The 720S GT3 felt great during qualifying and the team did a fantastic job with the set up. It felt like it was on rails, and really inspired confidence for both me and Shaun to push to the limits, and it is great to secure the first pole position of the season.
“In the race itself, I came out of the pits in second and finished in second so in that respect it was plain sailing, but I had pressure from behind all the way up until the chequered flag. Having traffic at this track is never easy as anything can happen, but the car felt strong and it was just a case of concentrating on the job in hand. The car continues to feel stronger at each race, and the team has done another great job, so I am really proud that we could secure the podium finish. All the ingredients are coming together nicely, and it should be a great race for the season finale at Donington Park.”
