Rob Bell Rounds off 2009 Season with a Podium Finish
27th October 2009
Sportscar racing driver, Rob Bell, finished a hectic schedule of sportscar racing this season with a third place podium in the final round of the FIA GT Championship held this weekend in Zolder, Belgium. Bell, with team mate, Andrew Kirkaldy, enjoyed a strong race, starting from seventh on the grid and making their way through to third.
Bell and Kirkaldy qualified the car in seventh place after a highly competitive qualifying session, fighting with the sister No.55 car of Tim Mullen and Antonia Garcia, and just losing out to them for sixth by a tenth of a second. Bell had his revenge at the start of the race itself, making the jump on Garcia to steal sixth in the opening lap. Bell, enjoying the handling of the Ferrari at tough Zolder track, had improved on his position by the time he handed over to Kirkaldy for the second stint. Excellent pitstop work from the CRS Racing crew brought the No.56 car out in fourth place and Kirkaldy had improved to second by the end of his stint. With other entries opting for different pitstop strategies, Bell emerged in third place for his final drive and was able to hold on to the final podium spot to the chequered flag.
Bell said of the weekend, “It came together well for us this weekend, with work the team had put in after the last race proving valuable to us in Zolder. It all ran smoothly, we had good pace in the car and we were consistent, which considering the ballast we were carrying for a pro-driver pairing, was all good. We were lapping very competitively and by the end of the race I was on the tail of the second placed car and also running close to the leader as well. It was good to finish the season with a strong result and bagging a podium was good, especially after all the hard work that has been put in by the team.
“I’ve had a very busy year and my racing season is finally over, so it’s time for a little relaxing now, before I turn my attentions to 2010. I’m looking at a number of options for this, which I’ll be working on in the coming weeks and I’m hoping my plans will all start to come together before we reach the end of 2009.”
